Effective Prayers You Can Use Tonight For Your Love

Effective Prayers You Can Use Tonight For Your Love

Goodnight prayers for your spouse can be a beautiful way to end the day and show your love and devotion to your partner. They are also a powerful act of intentionality that can strengthen your marriage, renew your own spirit, and help to align yourself and your marriage with God. Because here’s the thing so many of us forget, myself included, in the day to day routine of marriage – God is in your corner, fighting for your marriage even harder than you are. No one wants your relationship to succeed more than God. I once heard on a marriage podcast, “No one is fighting harder for your marriage than Christ” – and I love the imagery that comes with that, of Christ in our corner, guarding us and protecting our sacred union.

I want to give you many marriage prayer examples that can be tailored to fit your marriage and your circumstances, on any given night of the week. Saying these prayers before bed for your wife or husband will bring so many positive feelings to your own heart before you drift off to sleep. On the nights I make time to pray for my husband and our marriage, I find I have more pleasant dreams and consistently sleep better.

When I say my goodnight prayer for Mike, I tailor my prayer to who he is. I know his goals, his desires, his insecurities and stumbling blocks – so I make sure to speak to those, asking God to work within him and through him to lead our family.

How Prayer Strengthens Marriage

Praying for your spouse can strengthen your marriage in several ways:

  1. It helps to build intimacy and emotional connection. When you pray for your spouse, you are actively thinking about their needs, concerns, and well-being, which can deepen your understanding of them and your feelings of love and connection. It takes you out of the default state of thinking about yourself and forces you to think about them. It is an exercise in developing empathy. (Developing empathy is actually a wonderful reason to pray for people who you don’t feel like praying for – someone who has wronged you or hurt you, for example).
  2. It can improve communication and understanding. Praying for your spouse can help you to understand their perspective, which can help you communicate with them in a more compassionate and understanding way.
  3. It can help to build trust and forgiveness. When you pray for your spouse, you are asking for the wisdom, strength, and guidance to trust and forgive them, even in difficult times. It gives you a reminder that your spouse, no matter how flawed they are, no matter how many negative things you see in them, are God’s son or daughter, just as you are – and are worthy of love, forgiveness, and grace.
  4. It can bring peace and stability, especially when you pray for each other together. Praying together can help couples to find peace in their relationship, and to overcome the challenges and struggles that they may face. Praying at night can set you up for a better tomorrow. Asking your partner to join you in prayer for them, for your marriage, for your family, is one of the most beautiful acts of love you can offer. My husband is never more sexy than when he grabs ahold of my hand and bows his head to pray for us and our family.

It’s also important to remember that prayers don’t only have to be said before bedtime. You can also include prayers for your love in your daily prayers and morning routines to continue to lift your spouse up in prayer throughout the day. Along with daily prayers, it’s also a great way to keep the communication lines open between you and your spouse, and to remember to thank God for the blessings in your life.

I like to pray in the morning, before I get out of bed or reach for my phone; I feel like starting my day with God always sets me up for a better day. But incorporating goodnight prayers into your bedtime routine can really help to bring a sense of peace and closure to the day, allowing you to let go of any negative thoughts or worries and focus on the positive things in your life and the love you have for your spouse.

Goodnight Prayers for My Husband

Ok wifey – whether you pray aloud for your husband with him, or in private, the simple act of intentionally speaking to God about your husband and your marriage, will have surprising effects in your life. My advice to you, if you have any resentment or negative feelings for your husband, is to start off each of these prayers with something like this:

“Dear Father, I come to you, your daughter, an imperfect sinner, asking for your guidance and blessings. I need your help today. I am feeling angry/resentful/irritate/etc with my husband, but you know my true heart. You see all thing clearly, and you know that despite my feelings in this moment, I love and cherish him, and I want the best for him. I ask you to help cleanse my mind and heart of any negativity around my husband and our relationship. I ask that you help me to see my husband as you see him – worthy of grace, forgiveness, and infinite love.”

Put that into your own words and customize it however makes the most sense for you, but I have found that just being human and upfront with God in my prayers, and asking him to help me get over my negativity, always allows me to pray more authentically.

  1. “Dear God, I lift up my dear husband to you tonight. I pray for his well-being, his work and his daily life. I ask that you bless him with wisdom and discernment, and that he may find favor in all that he does. I pray that he will feel your love, grace and peace in his heart, now and always. Amen”\
  2. “Dear Father, I am so thankful for this man you have brought into my life – for every detail, large and small, that wove our paths together. I ask that you protect our marriage, help guide my husband as the leader of our family, and keep us all safe. Please work within my husband to help him grow, to reach his goals, to create the life we dream about together. I am so grateful for your love and protection. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.”
  3. “Dear Lord, I pray for my husband, that you will protect him from harm and guide him through the path you have set for him. Take good care of him, the way he takes good care of me. I ask that you grant him the strength and courage to face the difficulties that may come his way, and the wisdom to make the right choices. I pray that he will always feel your presence and your love, and that he will be blessed in all aspects of his life. Amen.”

Bible Verses for Inspiration for Your Marriage

Now that you’ve got some ideas for prayers for your love that you can use tonight, I want to leave you with some bible verses that can help inspire you in your pursuit of Christ and a healthy marriage. Drop me a note and let me know if you found any of these prayers helpful!

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.”

Ephesians 5:25-28

“Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.”

1 Peter 3:7

“The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.”

Proverbs 31:11-12

“Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.”

Colossians 3:19

“But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.”

1 Corinthians 11:3

“An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.”

Proverbs 12:4

“For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.”

Ephesians 5:23-24

“If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?”

1 Timothy 3:5

“House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.”

Proverbs 19:14

“Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.”

Titus 2:4-5
